Proper nutrition can prevent negative health outcomes in young female athletes.(Report) - California Agriculture

The arena of competitive sports for girls and young women was transformed by Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which states, 'No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.'

In 1971, male competitors outnumbered females by more than five-to-one in college sports and more than twelve-to-one in high school sports (NCWGE 2008). Due to regulations set forth by Title IX, the number of female competitors in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) increased more than 4.5-fold (from fewer than 30,000 to nearly 167,000) between 1971 and the 2004-2005 academic year (NCWGE 2008). Female high school athletic participation in the United States increased to a greater extent, from 300,000 in 1972 to over 2,950,000 in 2006 (NCWGE 2008). In 2009, there were nearly 300,000 female competitors in the California Interscholastic Federation alone (CIF 2009).

Girls and young women who participate in endurance sports such as long-distance running may suffer negative health outcomes as well as positive ones. They may have a higher risk of low bone mass, menstrual disturbances and disordered eating. [Graphic omitted]

Athletic involvement by girls and young women has resulted in many positive health, cognitive, psychological and behavioral benefits. Research shows that regular exercise increases overall strength and aerobic fitness, improves cardiovascular health and lowers the risk of chronic degenerative diseases such as atherosclerosis and diabetes (Haskell et al. 2007; Hasselstrom et al. 2002; Kemper et al. 1999). For girls, sports participation enhances self-esteem and self-efficacy and reduces feelings of depression (Colton and Gore 1991). Various reports document higher academic performance, cognitive function and degree completion rates among girls and young women who engage in competitive sports (NCAA 2005). Furthermore, the use of tobacco and drugs, as well as sexual promiscuity, is lower among female athletes (Kulig et al. 2003).

Despite the many benefits, involvement in some sports -- particularly those where a slender or lean body type (having less body fat) is important -- has been associated with a higher risk of developing certain negative health outcomes. Girls and women participating in gymnastics and endurance sports such as crosscountry running have demonstrated low bone mass, particularly at the lumbar spine; menstrual disturbances, including fewer cycles or no cycle (amenorrhea); and a high prevalence of disordered eating (Beals and Hill 2006; Nichols et al. 2007; Torstveit and Sundgot-Borgen 2005a).

Female athlete health issues

Beals and Hill (2006) reported the eating attitudes and behaviors, menstrual function and bone mass of 112 female U.S. collegiate athletes. The authors observed that compared to other athletes, those with slender/lean body types had higher frequencies of moderate to extreme body dissatisfaction and binge eating, and a trend (P = 0.08) toward a higher frequency of self-described eating disorders. Slender or lean female athletes also exhibited a higher prevalence of menstrual irregularity (cycles less than 28 days, nine or fewer cycles per year or no cycle at all) and lower bone mass.

Low bone mass.

Low bone mass in young women can lead to the early onset of osteoporosis and increased risked for bone fractures. Mudd et al. (2007) compared data from 99 female collegiate athletes participating in 12 different sports and found that endurance runners had lower bone density throughout the body and particularly at the lumbar spine, compared to gymnasts and softball players, while swimmers exhibited significantly lower bone density in their legs compared to athletes in all other sports. Additionally, approximately 40% of collegiate or postcollegiate (Cobb et al. 2003) and adolescent endurance runners (Barrack et al. 2008) had low bone mass for their ages.

Menstrual irregularity.

Adequate reproductive hormones, especially estrogen, are needed for bone mineralization during adolescence and for continued bone maintenance thereafter. Up to 66% of female competitive endurance runners exhibit menstrual irregularities, and 40% have low bone mass (Barrack et al. 2008; Cobb et al. 2003; Gibson et al. 2004; Warren and Chua 2008). These rates are about three to five times higher than reported estimates of these same conditions in healthy young women and girls who do not run competitively (van Hooff et al. 1998).

Gibson et al. (2004) observed a 66% prevalence of menstrual irregularity among 50 elite female endurance runners. In a sample of 423 California high school athletes, Nichols et al. (2007) found that girls participating in sports that benefit from a lean or slender body type had a higher prevalence of menstrual irregularity (26.7% and 16.6%, respectively; P > 0.005) compared to athletes in other sports but no increased evidence of disordered eating.

Eating disorders.

Eating disorders have been shown to disrupt the menstrual cycle, resulting in low or no estrogen production. Adequate levels of estrogen are needed to increase bone mineralization and, in turn, bone density. In a sample of 300 female collegiate cross-country runners, Thompson (2007) reported that 19.4% either currently or previously had an eating disorder, while Hulley and Hill (2001) found that 16% of their sample of elite women distance runners had a current eating disorder. These estimates are considerably higher than the 0.5% to 2% occurrence of anorexia or bulimia nervosa in the population of young, healthy, adult female noncompetitive runners (Academy of Eating Disorders 2011).

Furthermore, among a sample of collegiate athletes, young women involved in aesthetic sports such as cheerleading, diving and gymnastics (lean or slender body-build sport types) had the lowest body weight and highest scores on the Eating Attitudes Test, which is indicative of abnormal eating attitudes and behaviors such as dietary restraint, in which the individual restricts food intake to control body weight (Beals and Manore 2002).

Female Athlete Triad syndrome.

These interrelated conditions (eating disorders, amenorrhea and osteoporosis) were first officially recognized and defined as the 'Female Athlete Triad' by the American College of Sports Medicine Task Force on Women's Issues in 1993 (Yeager et al. 1993).

Subsequent epidemiologic studies found that among female athletes, the prevalence of all three aspects of this triad was low (about 1% to 3%) (Beals and Hill 2006; Cobb et al. 2003; Nichols et al. 2006). Several studies identified a portion of girls with menstrual disturbances but no eating disorders, and a portion of girls with low bone mass but no clinical menstrual disturbances (Hilton and Loucks 2000; Torstveit and Sundgot-Borgen 2005b). This prompted more research to better understand the causes of exercise-related low bone mass and menstrual disturbances in female athletes.

Energy deficit vs. exercise stress

An important question is whether these exercise-related health problems occur from an energy deficit, in which calories consumed do not meet calories needed for the increased level of physical activity, or from excess stress that alters the hormones regulating menstrual function and bone metabolism. Several well-controlled animal and human experimental studies have confirmed that as long as energy is available for physiological needs other than exercise, it promotes normal hormone function. This suggests that intense exercise does not in itself exert an additional stress that disrupts menstruation and bone metabolism.

Williams et al. (2001) trained a group of female monkeys to do 2 hours of endurance exercise (running) per day. The resulting energy deficit caused the complete cessation of their menstrual cycles. But once the monkeys were fed adequate calories to adjust for the increased energy expended on their endurance exercise regime, normal menstrual function gradually resumed over a period of 12 to 57 days. These findings demonstrate the critical role of energy in maintaining normal hormonal levels and menstrual function during exercise.

Ihle and Loucks (2004) evaluated the roles of energy deficiency and exercise stress on hormone concentrations that regulate bone metabolism by examining markers of bone turnover in 29 healthy, moderately active young women. First, the women spent 2 months on a balanced diet and exercise regimen that required about 25% of their energy intake. Then they were divided into three regimens where they continued to exercise at the same level but consumed a diet that was (1) adequate (met needs), (2) insufficient (met about 75% of needs) or (3) deficient (met about 55% of needs).

Dietary restraint, such as skipping meals or avoiding 'fattening' foods to control the shape or weight of one's body, can be associated with failure to ovulate and low bone mass. Female athletes in lower-intensity sports such as baseball are less prone to these problems. [Graphic omitted]

After just 5 days on an energy-restricted diet, women had significant changes in the hormones that regulate bone metabolism and turnover (such as thyroid hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1 and estradiol). Women on the insufficient diet had significantly lower thyroid hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1 and markers of bone deposition. Women on the deficient diet had even lower levels of these hormones and bone biomarkers, as well as significantly lower estradiol and increased bone resorption (the release of minerals such as calcium, magnesium and other nutrients).

Because the exercise stress remained constant, these findings indicate that energy deficits directly lowered metabolic rate, reduced bone deposition and increased bone resorption in a dosedependent manner. Together, these studies and others (Loucks and Thuma 2003) provide strong evidence of the direct role of low energy availability, not exercise stress, on the hormone disruptions contributing to menstrual disturbances and bone loss in female competitive athletes.

Low energy availability

Energy availability is the amount of energy that is not expended on exercise and therefore is available for performing the basal metabolic processes involved in organ function and the nonexercise activities of daily living. This relationship is represented in the following equation:

Energy Availability = (Energy Intake - Exercise Energy Expenditure) / Fat Free Mass

This value is standardized for lean or fat free mass (the portion of body weight that is not fat) because lean muscle tissue accounts for more than 80% of an individual's resting metabolic rate (Stipanuk 2000).

When evaluating the relationship between energy availability and the hormones that regulate menstrual function, investigators found that hormone disturbances occurred below an energy availability level of 30 kilocalories per kilogram of lean tissue or fat free mass (kcal/kg FFM), regardless of whether this low energy availability occurred as a result of decreased energy intake or increased exercise energy expenditure (Loucks 2006; Loucks and Heath 1994). Low energy availability occurs when 66% or less of basal metabolic energy needs are met, which for young adults has been defined as below 30 kcal/kg FFM per day. The cutoff may be higher for adolescents, since they are in a period of growth and development; however, this has not been evaluated in young athletes. It is recommended that future studies employ similar research methods among healthy, regularly menstruating, noncompetitive adolescent athletes to identify the energy availability level below which hormone disturbances occur.

Disordered eating behaviors

Research has indicated that anorexia nervosa, a condition that entails extreme dietary restriction and compulsive exercise, as well as several other subclinical disordered eating behaviors, is highly related to low energy availability and the development of low bone mass. These subclinical disordered eating behaviors include dietary restriction, purging and overexercise without concurrent compensatory eating.

Anorexia nervosa.

Patients with anorexia nervosa chronically exist in a state of severely low energy availability and exhibit marked menstrual disturbances. As a result, bone mass is classically low, with many exhibiting lumbar spine bone densities that are about two standard deviations below the average for their age groups. While the consequences epitomize those of Female Athletic Triad syndrome, the prevalence of this disorder among female athletes is so low that it likely represents a small percentage of those at risk.

Subclinical behaviors.

More common are subclinical disordered eating behaviors such as dietary restraint, aimed at reducing overall energy (or fat) intake in an attempt to control one's body weight or shape. Behaviors practiced by restrained eaters include restricting 'fattening' foods, avoiding eating for many hours, skipping meals and adopting rules or limitations regarding daily caloric intake.

Studies have identified an elevated prevalence of failure to ovulate (anovulation) and other subclinical menstrual disturbances (which disturb the menstrual cycle without necessarily causing amenorrhea) among several groups of adult women exhibiting excessive dietary restraint, including sedentary young adults, vegetarians and recreational runners (Barr et al. 1994). Additionally, both adult sedentary women and adolescent female endurance runners with restrained eating behaviors exhibited a greater degree of low bone mass (Barr et al. 1994; McLean et al. 2001). Reduced energy intake contributes to low energy availability, which likely accounts for the relationship between dietary restraint, menstrual dysfunction and low bone mass.

Menstrual disturbances, low bone mass

Menstrual disturbances have long been established as risk factors of low bone mass. While it was previously hypothesized that psychological or physiological stressors caused at least some cases of menstrual dysfunction, accumulating evidence indicates that most if not all menstrual disturbances in female athletes are preceded by an energy deficit due to dietary restriction or excessive exercise without adequate nutritional replenishment (Ihle and Loucks 2004).

Converging evidence from previous research studies has documented the direct effect of energy deficits on hormonal secretions from the pituitary gland, which controls many endocrine functions, including growth hormone production and the regulation of ovulation, as well as estradiol synthesis, all of which are needed for optimal bone mineralization and the attainment of peak bone density (Loucks 2006). Menstrual disturbances do not appear to cause low bone mass; rather, they are a sign of underlying hormone dysregulation, which may also negatively affect bone metabolism.

In addition, reduced bone mass can be associated with energy deficits that lower hormonal secretions, resulting in anovulation and other subclinical menstrual disturbances that often go unnoticed (McLean et al. 2001). Therefore, clinical menstrual function may not be an adequate signal of underlying hormone disruptions and associated bone-related risks. Because individuals with seemingly normal menstrual function may also be at risk of disrupted bone metabolism and consequently low bone mass, it is important to identify a proxy measure of low energy availability.

Macronutrients for female athletes

Proper nutrition influences sport performance and overall health by, for example, reducing injury risk while increasing energy levels, recovery time and immune function. Given the high activity levels of athletes, their requirements for some nutrients are higher than those of the general population. It is important for female athletes to be aware of their unique requirements and maintain diets that satisfy their specific needs.

Just consuming enough energy (calories) is not enough. For optimal health and peak performance, it is critical to consume the three primary macronutrients for energy metabolism (carbohydrates, protein and fat) as well as a multitude of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals).

Energy.

Consuming adequate energy is necessary to support high-intensity or endurance exercise. The 2005 Institute of Medicine Dietary Reference Intake report provides energy intake recommendations for all ages, but these should be carefully defined for each athlete based on age, development stage, activity level and proportion of lean tissue mass (IOM 2005)

Carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are important components of an athlete's diet, particularly an endurance athlete's. Besides being a primary macronutrient for energy metabolism, carbohydrates are needed to efficiently maintain the muscle glycogen that athletes use as fuel for vigorous exercise. It is recommended that athletes consume a high-carbohydrate snack or beverage 30 to 60 minutes after strenuous, glycogen-depleting exercise. This enhances both glycogen repletion and recovery from strenuous exercise. Depending on the athlete's training volume, carbohydrate requirements range from 6 to 10 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (IOM 2005), generally 50% to 60% of total energy intake.

Protein.

According to the most current research, the protein needs of athletes not participating in power (such as wrestling and weight lifting) or endurance (such as cross-country running) sports are similar to those of the general population. Therefore, most athletes' protein needs can be met by consuming the recommended level of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (IOM 2005). In addition, protein should make up 15% to 35% of total calories consumed. However, endurance and power athletes may require higher protein levels, ranging from 1.2 to 1.7 grams per kilogram of body weight per day, or almost twice the amount for sedentary individuals. This ensures that they are getting enough nitrogen, which is required for protein synthesis and muscle repair. To aid in postexercise repair, synthesis and maintenance of skeletal muscle, athletes should consume high-quality proteins (those with high bioavailability that contain the essential amino acids) such as soy and animal proteins, including egg and milk products (such as casein and whey).

Fat.

Besides yielding a substantial amount of energy, dietary fat provides important fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) and essential fatty acids. Dietary fat should make up 20% to 35% of the total diet and should provide no less than 20% of total energy needs to benefit athletic performance (Rodriguez et al. 2009).

Endurance and power athletes may need twice as much protein as sedentary individuals. After exercise, high-quality proteins, such as those found in dairy products, are critical to muscle repair. [Graphic omitted]

Vitamins and minerals

Due to their relatively high metabolic and nutrient needs, athletes should consume diets that provide at least the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for all micronutrients for each individual's respective age group (IOM 2005).

B vitamins.

B vitamins facilitate energy metabolism (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid and biotin) and promote muscle repair (folate, vitamin B12). Some reports suggest that the B vitamin requirements of competitive athletes are slightly elevated, and if so these higher needs likely are easily met with increased energy intakes. However, several B vitamins are often low in the diets of female athletes, including riboflavin, pyridoxine, folate and vitamin B12 (IOM 2005; Rodriguez et al. 2009). This can impair performance because severe deficiencies in vitamin B12 or folate can lead to anemia, a condition causing severe fatigue. B vitamin anemia is different from iron-related anemia and can affect the size of red blood cells. Animal-derived foods such as red meats and milk are good sources of B vitamins.

Antioxidants.

Antioxidant vitamins (such as C, E and the vitamin A precursor beta-carotene) and minerals (such as selenium) protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. These compounds become highly important during periods of increased exercise, particularly endurance-type exercise, since oxygen consumption increases 10 to 15 times with prolonged moderate- to high-intensity aerobic activity (IOM 2005; Manore 2002). Some reports suggest that vitamin E requirements for endurance athletes may be higher than for the general population. Vitamin E supplementation reduces inflammation and muscle soreness, speeding recovery times. It also deters exercise-induced DNA damage. Populations at risk of low vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene and selenium intake are those with diets low in fat, energy, vegetables and whole grains (IOM 2005; Manore 2002); these foods should be incorporated into the diets of all athletes.

Calcium and vitamin D.

Calcium serves many important functions and facilitates nerve conduction, muscle contraction, the maintenance of blood calcium levels and the mineralization of bone. Calcium promotes normal growth, development and the maintenance of strong bones. Vitamin D facilitates the absorption of calcium, is important for calcium utilization in the body and improves immune defenses. Female athletes with the highest risk of calcium deficiencies are those with low energy intakes or those who do not meet the dietary recommendation of 3 to 4 servings of dairy foods (such as milk, yogurt and cheese) per day (ACSM et al. 2000). Further, calcium absorption may be hindered due to low estrogen levels in girls and young women exhibiting disordered eating or amenorrhea (Cobb et al. 2003; Gibson et al. 2004; Rodriguez et al. 2009).

The calcium and vitamin D requirements for athletes exhibiting these conditions increase from the normal 1,300 milligrams calcium and 200 IU (international unit) vitamin D per day, to 1,500 milligrams calcium and 400 to 800 IU vitamin D per day (ACSM et al. 2000). While vitamin D can be synthesized when skin is exposed to the sun's ultraviolent rays, sunscreens inhibit this natural process, making adequate dietary intake essential.

Iron.

Iron is an important mineral for optimal athletic performance due to its role in energy production as well as its oxygen-carrying capacity (ACSM et al. 2000). Iron is a component of the hemoglobin in red blood cells, which transport oxygen to working muscles. Inadequate iron is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies among female athletes and leads to impaired muscle function and reduced performance during workouts and competition (Rodriguez et al. 2009). The iron needs of endurance athletes may be up to 70% higher than those of the general population (ACSM et al. 2000). Endurance athletes who consume primarily a vegetarian diet take in non-heme iron, a form that is absorbed much less efficiently than heme iron, which is found in red meat (IOM 2005). Female athletes at risk of low iron levels are endurance runners, vegetarians, adolescents and athletes who frequently donate blood (IOM 2005; Rodriguez et al. 2009). The recommendation for iron is 18 milligrams per day and can be obtained most easily from red meats.

Zinc and magnesium.

Zinc is important for normal growth, immune function, muscle repair and energy production. Zinc also reportedly influences basal metabolic processes, protein utilization and thyroid hormone function. Low zinc levels have been associated with reduced muscle strength, aerobic function and endurance (IOM 2005; Rodriguez et al. 2009). Female athletes with low animal protein and high fiber intakes are at increased risk of developing zinc deficiency.

Adequate magnesium levels in conjunction with zinc aid performance because of their joint roles in facilitating cellular metabolism, and cardiovascular, immune and hormone function. Magnesium deficiencies increase the oxygen required for endurance exercise, hindering performance. Athletes with diets low in energy have been documented to consume low magnesium levels. The daily recommended amounts of zinc and magnesium for adolescents are 12 and 300 milligrams per day, respectively. Readily available sources of these nutrients are animal red meats and milk.

Unique nutritional needs

Adolescent athletes represent a distinct subpopulation, since their diets must satisfy nutrient requirements for growth and development as well as the demands of their sports. The optimal diet for a young, developing athlete should maximize sport performance, while reducing injury risk and facilitating overall health, growth and maturation. Due to the metabolic and physiologic demands of their sports, the nutrient needs of young athletes can be much higher than their nonathlete peers and higher than the needs of young adult athletes who have reached maturity. It is important to make competitive adolescent athletes aware of their specific needs as well as to identify those athletes at risk of developing deficiencies.

Counseling by a registered dietitian may be necessary to design diets that meets the unique needs of adolescent female athletes. While prior research has provided valuable information about athlete groups with a potential increased risk of developing menstrual disturbances and low bone mass, the majority of studies assessed collegiate and adult athletes and looked at groups at only one point in time. Therefore, it is recommended that future research evaluate adolescents over time to identify the nutritional and exercise behaviors that optimize bone mineral gains and reduce fracture risk. Further, it is necessary to educate athletes, parents, coaches and athletic trainers about behaviors that promote lifetime bone health.

Discipline is tie that binds 700 victories to Marshall's Gaters - Chicago Sun-Times

Dorothy Gaters insists she isn't considering retirement. ButMarshall's girls basketball coach admits this has been the mosttrying and frustrating season of her 26-year career 'because ofinjuries and not having kids we needed to get an edge on good teams.'

'I'm very happy I haven't gone through many seasons like this,'Gaters said. 'But that is the way it is sometimes.'

So she pinned a sign to the bulletin board in her office. Itreads: 'When you are at the end of your rope, tie a knot and holdon.'

'I feel like that for many days,' she said. 'So I wait for thegood days. They will come.'

One of those days was Saturday when Marshall beat Fenger forGaters' 700th victory. Let's put that achievement in perspective.Only 11 boys coaches have won more. No other girls coach has won morethan 530.

But Gaters isn't into milestones. She said she didn't have time tocelebrate. Not a cake or a pizza or a Gatorade dunking. She had tosee her grandson Darius play in a grade school basketball game.

'I'm not much for records,' she said. 'It says I put a lot ofyears into this job. It seems as if it is someone other than myself.I don't think I have been around that long. Time has flown by.

'I'm proud of my record. But I'm more proud of the young ladieswho have competed in our program and allowed me to reach thismilestone. My great satisfaction is seeing kids getting together andgoing to college, then hearing from former players after they leave.'

Gaters never thought it would come to this. A Marshall graduate,she grew up in an era when there were no sports for girls. She wantedto be a teacher, not a coach. The truth is she became a coach becauseno one else on the faculty volunteered for the job.

'In the beginning, I had no clue what I wanted to do. I didn'tknow anything about basketball at the time,' she said. 'But I wantedto get involved. I got input from a lot of people. I put piecestogether.'

Her mentors were Marshall coaches Luther Bedford and Al Williamsand Nick Seabrook, coach of the Chicago Debs' AAU team, who taughther about discipline and strategy. In the early 1980s, she met Hallof Fame coach John McLendon, who shared his philosophy and theoriesof the game.

'The most important thing I've learned about basketball is thateverything in life has to do with discipline,' Gaters said. 'I had toget the kids thinking the way I wanted them to think. Then executionwould be there.

'I have always been an orderly person. As a student, I wasn't loudor rambunctious. That isn't the kind of behavior I like to see inathletes. Without knowing what I wanted to do, even if I was 100percent wrong, I had to have order.'

Gaters' uncompromising devotion to her program and her girls haspaid off with an unprecedented seven state championships. She hasearned widespread respect and created a legend. She has become,whether she likes it or not, the Morgan Wootten of girls basketball.

'The way she gets girls ready to play and interested in playingbasketball is so phenomenal to me,' Bedford said. 'Some kids don'tfit in, some are out of control, but she knows how to nurture themand discipline them. I don't know how she keeps going. The kids likeher but not because she is easy on them but because she is strictwith them.'

Maine West coach Derril Kipp, who has competed against Gaterssince 1982, said the hallmark of her program is discipline.

'What is so impressive is the way she gets her kids to play hardat all times,' he said. 'When you play her teams, you realize youmust adjust to a lot of pressure.'

Joe Smith of New York-based Women's Basketball News said Gatershas been able to maintain consistency over the years, which he arguesis virtually impossible in a public high school environment.

'It reflects her ability to successfully develop players andpersuade them to want to go to high school,' Smith said. 'Her kidsexecute offensive and defensive schemes, which many city schoolsdon't do.'

Marshall principal Don Pittman, a former boys coach at Carver, ismost impressed by Gaters' work ethic.

'I was a hard worker as a coach but when I look at her work ethic,it amazes me how hard she works,' Pittman said. 'That's whatseparates her from other coaches who think they are doing a good job.It is amazing how she is able to maintain her energy. I can see why Inever won a state title because I couldn't maintain her energylevel.'

Overtown Youth Center hosts girls for National Girls & Women in Sports Day - Westside Gazette

The Greater Miami Tennis Foundation conducted its Third Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day at the Overtown Youth Center last Saturday. About 50 girls, ranging in age from as young as five to 18 attended the event. The girls who attended were given special clinics in the sports of tennis and basketball. They were also coached in life skills and presented career programs.

The Greater Miami Tennis Foundation does an after school and summer program as a partner with the Overtown Youth Center, which is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Organization. The goals of the program are to improve the economic conditions and the opportunities of the areas they serve.

Some top women in Miami-Dade who have sports-related careers took time out from their busy schedules to take part in the program. Some of the participants were Jody Applebaum Steinhauer, Director of the Junior Orange Bowl Tennis Tournament; Vickie Ellis-Hatch, a nutritionist specializing in pediatrics; Dr. Janine Johnson, a podiatry fellow from Barry University's podiatry program; Vernessa Thompson, former girls high school basketball coach who works with the GoGirlGo program; plus staff members from the Overtown Youth Center.

Greater Miami Tennis Foundation Development Director Susan Krupnick-Gregorie spoke of some of the special topics some of the guest mentors addressed to the assembled girls.

'Through the GoGirlGo project, we combined sports for girls with an educational component that consisted of reading stories about famous female athletes, and addressing issues girls face such as ranging from being bullied, being considered different, having eating disorders, and things of that nature,' Krupnick-Gregoire told the Westside Gazette.

The number of attendees was a bit lower than Krupnick-Gregoire expected, possibly due to rain the day before the event, in her opinion.

'A lot of them (the girls) had played tennis or basketball before, while for others it was their first exposure. They were a little bit reluctant to try things but once they got on the court, they seemed to enjoy themselves,' said Krupnick-Gregorie.

Thirteen-year-old Daja Lucas played tennis and basketball for the first time. She said she did not have any favorite athletes, but she had fun playing and did not get too tired in the process.

Sixteen-year-old Shantle Brown played a little basketball and tennis. She said she thought about playing professional women's basketball one day, but during the program she just played for fun. Playing for fun is Brown's preference these days. With regards to playing, 'I learned not to be ashamed of yourself,' said Brown.

Seventeen-year-old high school senior, Brandee Oliver played basketball and tennis also for fun. The day's program was fun and interesting for her. She said running up and down the basketball court could get her tired if she does not pace herself. Oliver said she just sits down when she gets too tired.

Five-year-old Jasmine Bell, one of the youngest participants at the event, said she tried to learn to dribble the basketball, as the ball bounces over her head every time. But she said basketball is fun and she will keep playing for fun.

For 29 year old Charla McPhee, Girl Scout leader with Bethel Apostolic Temple, service unit 41, she gained a bit of knowledge from leading some of the younger girls who attend her church on this field trip.

'I learned more about nutrition values, about food and hidden facts about sugars and fats in various foods we eat that we don't even know we're eating,' said McPhee. She also got a chance to practice some basketball and tennis, and was working on a few 'outside shots' before she spoke to the West side Gazette.

Vernessa Thompson of the GoGirlGo tried to drive the point home about the need to build girls self-esteem. She tried to emphasize the point that peer pressure is real, and she tried to give the girls ways to deal with it.

'We discussed what you see on television may or may not have any bearing on how you look. I told them that the majority of the time the girls they see on television are not girls that they would encounter each and every day of their lives,' said Thompson.

Thompson tried to stress to them the fact that many of them are still growing and developing.

'The ears and nose grow bigger, but that's a part of development. The braces are there for a reason. One of the girls in the class had braces on her teeth and instead of looking at it as something negative, I encouraged them to take it as a positive, because once those braces come off, there will be beautiful teeth there,' said Thompson.

Using our heads wisely - Chicago Sun-Times

A new study shows that football and wrestling account for most ofthe mild head injuries among 10 high school sports. Nothing unusualin that finding, because the players are in grueling physical contactwith other athletes. The surprise was that girls' soccer ranked No.3 in head injuries.

As reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association,the study tracked 1,219 injuries at 235 high schools nationwide overthree years. Football players accounted for 773 of those injuries,or more than 63 percent of the cases. Wrestlers had 10 percent ofthe head injuries, followed by female soccer players with 6 percent.

The study focused on injuries that were serious enough for thestudent athlete to be removed from play and evaluated. Injuriesamong football players get the most attention, but head injuries canand do occur in every sport, including girls' soccer.

Soccer has become one of the most popular sports for girls since1996, when the U.S. women's team won its first Olympic gold medal.This new research should not scare off any girl interested in playingthe most popular game in the world. If future studies show anincrease in head injuries, soccer players can do as football playersand wrestlers do: Start wearing a protective helmet.

Growing Park District Program Doesn't Skip Kids' Needs - Chicago Sun-Times

Double Dutch, an exhausting and demanding rope-jumping exercisethat has been popular with inner-city girls for years, has been addedto the 1996 Olympic competition.

Sabrina Steward has been teaching the skill to hundreds of kidsthis summer.

When she was growing up on Chicago's South Side, Steward, 25,took advantage of every opportunity she had during the summer toparticipate in sports and stay out of trouble.

Steward attended the South Shore YMCA on East 71st Street andgot involved in several activities sponsored by the Chicago ParkDistrict. Later, as a student at Curie High School, she participatedin swimming, gymnastics and cheerleading. But she noticed a lot ofclassmates and other kids in her neighborhood weren't as active.

'They'd get bored, and they'd find other things to do,' shesaid.

Steward isn't bored this summer. She is among a cadre ofexperienced, certified coaches and physical education instructorsthat is putting thousands of city kids through their paces in MayorDaley's sum mer sports camps.

In its second year, the camp program has been expandedenormously. Last year, it attracted 6,200 youngsters from ages 10-17to 71 camps at 60 sites throughout the city. This summer, nearly13,000 kids are participating in 12 sports at 365 weeklong camps at165 parks.

'It is an attempt to introduce kids to the proper techniques ofsports and bring about a lifetime participation in recreation,' saidTom Mitchell, the sports camp coordinator.

'It's an attempt to get kids off the streets and get theminvolved in a positive venture. It is gratifying to see kids go fromone camp to another. Some kids travel a long way to attend a camp.

'The emphasis is on kids having fun and learning propertechniques, not just playing games. Hopefully, they will getsomething out of it and continue in sports when they go back toschool in the fall.'

Mitchell, 54, has been working with kids all his life. Hecoached football at Brother Rice High School for 30 years before retiring after the 1993 season.Directing the mayor's summer program helps to keep him young andactive, he said.

The weeklong camps are continuing through Aug. 25. They offerfree instruction in baseball, basketball, football, soccer,volleyball, gymnastics, water polo, track, softball, tennis,wrestling, cheerleading and double dutch.

'The camps are important,' said Rich Bertoni, the mayor'sdirector of citywide recreation, 'because we want to help kids buildtheir self-esteem by participating. We want to give them room tokeep moving up, to keep accomplishing, by integrating with otherkids, by having them learn during the summer.'

Bertoni said the camps are designed to teach youngsters skillsat their entrance level, then bring them along so they canparticipate at any level - park district, school or private clubs.He projects the program could grow to accommodate 20,000 youngstersnext year.

'When I was a kid, I was taught by a physical educationinstructor in the summer, someone who was an expert in football orbasketball,' Bertoni said.

'Now the trend is: To be the best, you have to be taught by thebest. Our instructors are expert in each activity. And they arerole models, too.'

Few fill their role-model responsibilities better than Steward.In September, she will begin work as a physical education teacher forthe park district at Trumbull Park on the Southeast Side. She willteach dance, aerobics, cheerleading and sports for girls. She knowswhat the benefits are.

'This program has given inner-city girls an opportunity to learnnew things and stay safe,' she said. 'Before these summer camps,there wasn't an opportunity for girls to get involved in sports untilthey got into high school.

Fitzhugh leaves lasting legacy for IHSA sports - Chicago Sun-Times

Harry Fitzhugh once was singled out in a Chicago Sun-Times poll as'the most influential figure' in the history of high school sports inIllinois.

As executive director of the Illinois High School Association from1968 to 1978, Fitzhugh oversaw the implementation of the two-classbasketball system in 1972, the adoption of the football playoffs in1974, the introduction of the girls interscholastic program in 1977and the expansion of the boys program.

Fitzhugh died June 29 at his retirement home in La Jolla, Calif.He was 90. Private family services were held Tuesday in Auburn, Ill.,where Fitzhugh was raised and attended high school. He was buried inPawnee, Ill.

Fitzhugh, who served as a teacher, coach and administrator for 44years, also guided the construction of the IHSA's presentheadquarters building in Bloomington and the organization's move fromits old offices in Chicago in 1974. And he directed the IHSA througha complete revision of its constitution and bylaws that were ratifiedin 1976.

'He was the right man at the right time for the IHSA,' said JimFlynn, an assistant executive director of the IHSA. 'He saw the bigpicture, but he retained his small-town manner of doing things.

'He had a great sense of humor, and he wasn't afraid to laugh athimself. If he made a mistake, he would say: 'Well, I really blewthat one.' He was committed to doing what he felt was best for theIHSA.'

Dave Fry, who was hired by Fitzhugh in 1957 and served asexecutive director from 1991 to 2002, said Fitzhugh's personality,style and knack for delegating responsibilities made it easy forthings to get done.

'He was not the kind of guy who looked for changes,' Fry said,'but when people had good ideas, he would facilitate the processingof those ideas. He was a good person to say: 'Let's go get it done.'And he did.'

When Fitzhugh retired, the IHSA had expanded its state series to11 sports for boys, 12 sports for girls, music, speech and chess. Andhe wasn't afraid to admit that he was wrong in his initialdetermination to retain the one-class basketball format againstproponents of a two-class system.

'There were two sides to the issue,' Fitzhugh said in an interviewlast year. 'Some wanted to keep one class so there will only be onestate champion and small schools, like Hebron [1952 state champion]and Cobden [1964 state runner-up], will forever have a chance to win.And some wanted to give small schools more of a chance to getrecognition.

'I didn't think it would ever work. I wanted to keep one class.With two classes, you would never have a true state champion. Butthey proved me wrong. I thought there would be empty seats. Buteveryone in town showed up for the tournament.

Girls' basketball in a spinout // Weak junior high programs a factor - Chicago Sun-Times

When Bob Allard became girls basketball coach at Lake Zurichseven years ago, his team won four games. The Bears have lost onlytwice this season and star player Lisa Foss is the No. 1 scorer inthe Chicago area and one of the most celebrated players in the state.

Despite these successes, few girls come out for the basketballteam. Allard is not the only coach faced with the problem, however. Several suburban schools are struggling to fill freshman, juniorvarsity and varsity rosters, sometimes having to drop a level becauseof lack of interest.

Coaches cite several possible reasons for the problem: Weak programs at the junior high school level and poor communicationwith them. Interest in sports isn't as high among girls as it used to be. High turnover among lower level coaches. Budget cuts.

Lake Zurich used to have freshman, junior varsity and varsityteams. The freshman team was dropped two years ago, victim of abudget cut. When the school wanted to reinstate the program, thereweren't enough girls to fill three teams. None of last year'ssophomore starters returned.

'The interest in sports isn't as high for girls as it used tobe,' Allard said. 'I saw the trend start about five years ago.When Title IX was passed {in 1972}, it was new. Sports wassomething girls could never do before. But it's not new any moreand there are a lot of opportunities open to girls.

'They make decisions as early as seventh grade about whether they're going to be a cheerleader or a gymnast or a basketballplayer. A lot of times being a basketball player isn't as popularas something else.

'They are not willing to put the time in. I expect them to goto summer camps and play in leagues. They get in the program for ayear or two and drop out. By the time they're juniors, they candrive a car, they get jobs, dating gets heavier and basketball takesup too much time.'

Lake Zurich players agree with Allard. 'They have to do what their friends do,' Foss said. 'Theydon't want to be called a jock all the time.'

They also suggested if girls' sports received more recognition,more girls might want to participate.

'It's a social event to go to a boys' game,' senior Liz Ewingsaid. 'Last year, we were undefeated and just the parents came towatch. The guys had the worst season they've had in 10 years and thestands were full.'

Allard said one way to keep girls interested is to start at thejunior high level. Basketball programs begin in sixth grade but one ofAllard's complaints is the schools don't communicate with each other.

Recently, Allard and the community's junior high coachesdiscussed ways to cooperate, like having junior high players come tovarsity games and Allard helping the junior highs with practicedrills. 'Whatever we start now, it still will be a long time beforewe see the benefits,' Allard said.

Highland Park coach Tom O'Donnell can empathize with Allard. He dropped the junior varsitythis season because he didn't have enough girls to play. In1986-87, the school will drop the varsity program for at least oneyear but will compete at the jayvee and freshman levels.

'We don't feel we are competitive,' O'Donnell said. 'Our aim isto have our kids competing at an appropriate level and for them tofeel good about it. We need more experience and skill development.'

'It is difficult to play a varsity schedule with a team whichhas jayvee skills,' said athletic director Jim Swanson. 'The kidsunderstand the situation. Their feelings are mixed. The olderkids have more to lose and the younger kids have more to gain bytaking this step.'

'I don't have the kids coming out,' said O'Donnell. 'Thecommunity is more interested in individual sports for girls - tennis,gymnastics and swimming. There are many outlets for girls otherthan sports - plays, chorus, pom-pon.

'The image for a boy is to be good in sports. But a girl inbasketball doesn't get that kind of recognition. The problem atthis school is an image problem, even to the point of being negative. They don't like being a jock.'

Like Allard, O'Donnell believes interest must be triggered atthe junior high level. He said the junior high programs in his areado not spark interest among girls. There also is a high turnoveramong coaches.

'For any high school to be suc cessful,' O'Donnell said, 'you have to have the image early thatit's OK to play basketball and still be feminine.'

Financial woes led Wauconda to drop a team, combining thefreshmen and sophomores into a junior varsity. It is speculated,however, if more girls had been interested, school officials mighthave found a way to keep the team. When it was dropped, seven-yearvarsity coach Lee Oler quit.

'Early, when the big thing was Title IX, a lot of girls weretrying sports,' Oler said. 'But now sports is worn out. Camps used to bebig. I'd get 10 or 15 players. But then I was lucky to get two orthree. The girls have either got jobs or other things to do.

'If we had had more numbers, the school might have tried harderto keep the team. I'm not blaming it on the school completely.It's just a change in trends. Two years ago, were were 29-2 and wewent to the supersectional. Last year, we were 20-5 but I had toscrape to get players.'

Like Lake Zurich and Highland Park, Wauconda doesn't have astrong junior high program. Oler said they play about eight gamesin a season. He agreed a strong junior high program may be the keyto stirring interest among girls.

Coaches who succeed in persuading girls to try out for theirhigh school programs also work to stir interest among junior highplayers. At New Trier, 60 girls tried out for three teams thisseason. Last year, 100 tried out.

'Any program that works at it will be successful,' New Triercoach John Schneiter said. 'If the coaches are really dedicated andwork hard, and if the kids know they're interested, they'll want toplay the sport. It's not winning and losing that's success butknowing the coaches are trying as hard as they can.'

Schneiter sends a letter to every girl that made her junior highteam to congratulate her and invite her to attend high school gamesfree of charge. He also attends junior high games to get to knowthe players and coaches.

'The earlier the interest, the better,' he said. 'They knowwe're interested in them as people, not just as players. The letteremphasizes good grades and good citizenship and, if they are lucky,they can play basketball. New Trier hasn't had a problem gettingnumbers out for the sport.'

York also is successful is attracting players and coach DonHudgens attributes much of his success to the junior high programsand the relationship the high school has with them. He visits thejunior highs often. This season, York had 75 girls come out forfive teams.

'We work very hard to develop a positive relationship withthem,' Hudgens said. 'We feel it's our responsibility to help in anyway we can. Anything we can do for them will be reflected in ourprogram later. We have a good line of communication because we workat it.'

At Maine West, 80 girls tried out for three teams. A fourthteam will be added next year. For the last three summers, the DesPlaines school has run a three-day-a-week program for elementary andjunior high girls. Both of coach Derril Kipp's assistants arejunior high coaches.
